The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed Scream franchise star Melissa Barrera has been removed from Scream VII after social media posts referencing the Israel-Hamas war. Barrera played Sam Carpenter, the Scream series’ reboot lead in Scream V and Scream VI.
Additionally, Deadline cited sources as saying she was removed from the franchise “due to the reposts in her Instagram stories which have been perceived as anti-Semitic.” Scream VII is now left without the franchise’s currently established final girl, whose story would have been continued in the upcoming film from Chris Landon (Freaky). The Scream VII director took to X, to express his thoughts on the matter sharing, “This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.”
Production company Spyglass has released a statement, which reads as follows: “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.” This appeared in Variety.
Update: 11/21, 8 p.m. Post updated with the statement from Spyglass.
